Auctioneers and Auction Clerks – The Licensing Division enforces state laws that govern auctioneers and auction clerks.

Abandoned Mine Lands – Abandoned coal mines can pose a serious hazard to health, safety and general public welfare. The Commission is responsible to alleviate these hazards throughout western North Dakota.

Electricity – Investor-owned power companies are regulated to ensure that consumers receive safe and reliable service at a reasonable rate. The Commission regulates these companies; it is also responsible for siting facilities such as power plants and transmission lines.

Gas Pipeline Safety - The Commission is responsible for regulating natural gas pipeline safety.

Grain and Hay – State law requires that grain elevators, grain buyers and hay buyers be licensed and bonded. The Commission’s Licensing Division is responsible for enforcing these laws.

Mining – The Commission is responsible for regulating coal mining in North Dakota. This jurisdiction includes pre-mining permitting, actual mining activities, and land reclamation once mining is completed.

Natural Gas – The Commission regulates investor-owned natural gas utilities. The Commission is also responsible for monitoring pipeline safety in North Dakota.

Railroads – The Commission is responsible for representing the state’s shipping interest in federal rail proceedings before the Surface Transportation Board, Congress, and courts.

Telephone – The Commission regulates many of the services offered by investor-owned phone companies. The Commission also works with consumers who are having phone-related problems.

Weighing & Measuring Devices – The Commission’s Testing & Safety Division is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of all commercial measuring and weighing devices in North Dakota. Gas pumps and grocery scales are some of the most commonly tested pieces of equipment. 

Pipeline Carrier - The Commission is responsible for regulating common pipeline carriers regarding the transportation of crude petroleum, coal, or gas that is purchased or purchased and sold.
